Neo Pop Picnic

What Is Neo Pop Picnic?

Think a mini roving, Retro music and arts festival inspired by the 1980’s novelty of a purely takeaway picnic.

Hosted in the new urban neighbourhood of Darling Square, Neo Pop Picnic is a free public program of live music, roving performers and old school 80’s entertainment.

Darling Square was once home to Sydney’s Major Entertainment centre a significant cultural epicentre of the CBD which first opened in 1983.

Neo Pop Picnic event series pays homage to the legacy and history of this iconic location by celebrating the music and culture of this memorable decade.

Darling Square is a new urban neighbourhood and the perfect destination for Sydney to come together and reimagine cultural experiences. A place to socially connect, an active and vibrant town centre that illustrates the cultural and creative personality of Sydney.

This retro themed event provides the opportunity to explore the nostalgia, heritage and rich legacy of this once bustling entertainment destination.

Supporting Local Artists

This event has been made possible through a PLAY THE CITY grant funded by Create NSW. It has enabled Vintage Allsorts to engage a wide cross section of local independent artists with the majority of the grant funding going directly to these artists through performance fees.

There are no huge overheads, or expensive production requirements, no external agency commissions. Vintage Allsorts has exclusively managed all of the curation, admin and delivery of the event ensuring direct employment opportunities with the financial benefit going straight to local artists.

The line up features both established musicians and performers as well as emerging new talent. The curated weekly offering will showcase a diverse range of performance styles, genres as well as broad cultural, gender and age representation. The offering is an eclectic melting pot of energy and enthusiasm all wrapped together in an inclusive and accessible creative theme. The program has been developed to encourage and support artists to be flexible, agile and responsive to this new normal Covid Safe performance environment.

Why This Event?

Neo Pop Picnic is a platform for audiences to engage with new experiences that drive purposeful value and build meaningful relationships while supporting the local arts community through direct employment opportunities.

Vintage Allsorts is passionate about shaping and growing the independent arts sector. Live music doesn’t have to be seen in a concert hall, memorable culinary experiences don’t need to take place in a fine dining restaurant.

Through this event we are re-imagining cultural experiences and taking our creativity outdoors to connect with culture in the wide open, Covid Safe green spaces of Darling Square. Our community style picnic event will create a family friendly space for locals to come together and make memories in this new colourful, vibrant CBD town centre.

The Covid pandemic has reminded us of the need and for connection, community and a return to simpler pleasures.

Live entertainment drives culture and brings society together and now more than ever there is a desire for genuine human connection to experience real rather than digital life.
